Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
